Assemblies at Walworth Primary School
Assemblies at Walworth are split into two, one lower school and one upper school. This has been done specifically to make it more personal to the age range to allow for better understanding and communication of information.

An assembly that focuses on Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health will be presented to the lower school on the 3rd week of each half-term. These assemblies can be presented by the class teacher, class group or with an engaging external visitor. It is the responsibility of each class teacher to organise the assembly for that term. Assemblies can be a useful place to share information and open up general discussions about children’s mental health.
Assemblies are used to share information with children about events both in and out of school in the local community or more on a national and international level. Children are allowed to make contributions during assembly and their views are valued and the expectation is that all listen. Specific assemblies do take place at specific times in the year eg. Remembrance Day, Red Nose Day, Children in Need, etc to ensure all our children are aware of the events going on around them outside school.
The main purpose of assemblies is to celebrate children`s success within the week. This acts as a huge motivator not only for those achieving the highest awards but also for others to motivate them to try harder. Each class has a “Star of the week” and this award is supported by numerous awards given to children for individual achievement related to, either, social, artistic or academic progress. The Star of the week is presented with an award to take home along with a trophy that they keep in their possession in school for one week. They also have their lunch at a special table in the dining room for that day having juice in a champagne glass. Both of these are great motivators for our children. Each winners photograph is also placed on our Oscar board in the foyer for one week.
Assemblies are also used to celebrate our children`s sporting success both in and out of school. Again this is hopefully a motivation tool for all children trying to show how much success they can achieve with some effort. Awards, medals and certificates are given to, at times, large groups of children who have attended specific activities to celebrate their achievement and success. Children`s own progress is also shared with the whole group for achievement at out of school clubs etc. All of these are designed to raise children`s self-esteem and self–worth both in and out of school.
One of our main aims in school is to try and encourage children to attend school as often as possible. This being the case we celebrate children`s attendance every term with certificates for those attending at or above the required level.
The “hot seat challenge” is also included in some assemblies for the older children. This is where the children ask each other questions, which they must know the answer to, and the correct answer allows the child to sit in the hot seat. Whoever is in the hot seat at the end of this timed challenge receives a financial reward.
Finally, there is sometimes the need to provide the children with reminders about how they are expected to manage their conduct in and around school.
